Tree peonies, or 牡丹 Mudan in Chinese, are long-lived deciduous woody shrubs native to China that will grow in USDA zones 4-9. There are several wild species which have contributed genetics to the cultivated tree peony, Paeonia suffruticosa. The mid to late spring blossoms of tree peonies are unrivaled in size, color and fragrance. Though somewhat slow growing, a mature tree peony can have over fifty, 8-10’’ flowers and will bloom for about two weeks. Tree peonies are deer resistant and fairly drought tolerant once established. Plant in well drained fertile soil with 5-6 hours of sun. Tree peonies bloom on ‘old wood’ and are not cut back in the fall. See our Learn section for more information on tree peony care and their long history as cultivated plants.
All named variety tree peonies are grafts on herbaceous peony rootstock.
Availability is quite limited on some cultivars.
Numbered tree peonies are seed grown, and one of a kind. These will begin to ship in mid October.
