This famous variety comes from Luoyang, the ancient city in Henan Province that was the capital of China during many dynasties. For over a millennium, Luoyang has been a major center of peony cultivation. Today the main downtown boulevard is planted with enormous specimens of Luoyang Red.
Cultivar group, area of origin: Central Plains cultivar group, this historical cultivar originates from Luoyang city, Henan Province in China.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright and slightly spreading, grows to 4.5' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Heavy semi-double, 8-10".
Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second or third week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 5-9.
Plant size: 1 year old grafted tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a graft root. The plant may or may not have some of its own roots already developed. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
