Name in Japanese and romaji: 花競 Hana Kisoi
Notable characteristics: Large, vibrant, deep, cherry pink blossoms, held up on strong stems. Deer resistant.
Area of origin: In Osaka, Japan before 1910.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright growth habit. Vigorous grower, to 4' tall and 3.5' wide.
Flower form and size: Perfect semi-double, 8". Petals somewhat ruffled. Each petal is darker at the base and curls around a center of golden stamens.
Flower fragrance: Light and spicy-sweet.
Bloom time: Late mid-season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old tree peonies have 1 woody stem with a well developed root system. This size plant will most likely flower its second spring in the ground.
