Persimmon
American persimmons (Diospyros virginiana) are a cold hardy, easy to maintain fruit tree well suited for cultivation in USDA zones 4-9. Fruit are 1-2'' in size, smaller than their Asian cousins. What they lack in size, the make up for in flavor. When fully ripe, the fruit have a jellylike consistency and sweet, complex flavor with notes of apricot and spices. Trees grow best in a full sun location and will reach 30' if not pruned. With some training and pruning, trees can be maintained at 15'.
