Paeonia, 'Anna Marie' hybrid tree peony

Notable characteristics: Orchid-lavender petals are accented by dark burgundy central flares. Large, matte green, foliage is similar to that of many hybrid tree peonies. Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.

Bill Seidl of Manitowoc, Wisconsin was a prolific breeder of hybrid peonies. 'Ann Marie' is unique in that both its parents were yellow peonies. Bill thought so highly of this plant that he named it after his mother. This cultivar readily sets seeds when hand pollinated and is of particular interest for future tree peony breeding. 

Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: P. lutea hybrid, Seidl, 1984.

Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Semi-spreading and upright grower, to 3' tall and 4' wide.

Flower form and size: Single, 6-7". Flowers are well displayed on top of foliage. 

Flower fragrance: Light. 

Bloom time: Mid-season hybrid tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.

Plant size: 1 year old grafted tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a graft root. The plant may or may not have some of its own roots already developed. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
