Name in Chinese and pin yin: 咸池爭春 Xian Chi Zheng Chun
Notable characteristics: This is truly a spectacular plant, vigorous and floriferous. Pink with a hint of fuchsia, blossoms will bloom in the lotus or anemone form when the plant is still young, while flowers on mature shrubs are a full double form.
This classical variety is named for the natural hot springs which were said by ancient Chinese poets to be the preferred bathing area for forest nymphs and woodland sprites in need of refreshment.
Hybridizer: Unknown. Classical variety from Luoyang city, Henan province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright and spreading habit. Grows to 3.5' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Globular double, 8". Upward or side facing.
Flower fragrance: Sweet.
Bloom time: Early Central Plains cultivar, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the first or second week of May.
Zone hardiness: Best in USDA zones 6b-9. When grown in cold zone 6 and below, will suffer winter damage.
