Name in Chinese and pin yin: 墨紫絨金 Mo Zi Rong Jin

Notable characteristics: Luminous black purple, single flowers somewhat hidden among the leaves. Broad, blueish green leaves, upright and spreading habit. Vigorous grower and prolific bloomer.

Cultivar group, area of origin: Central Plains cultivar group, this historical cultivar is from the famous peony growing center of Heze, in Shandong province.  

Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Spreading habit, grows to 3' tall and 3' wide.

Flower form and size: Double form, 7-8".

Flower fragrance: Spicy-sweet.

Bloom time: Mid-season tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second or third week of May.

Zone hardiness: Proven is USDA zones 5-9.

Plant size: Grafted 1 year old tree peonies have at least 1 woody stem and a proportional root system. This size plant will most likely flower its first or second spring in the ground.
