Notable characteristics: These plants are seed grown, not grafted, are one-of-a-kind, and no two will be exactly alike. They are part of a hybridizing program to cross Japanese tree peonies with Chinese rockii tree peonies. Flower forms are light semi-double with the golden stamens showing in the center. Most flowers have the distinctive maroon flare at the petal's base. The photos shown here give an idea of the variations possible. These plants have been sorted into pink and dark pink categories and can be selected by plant size below.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright, flowers held well above the foliage. Grows to about 4.5' tall and 4' wide. Tree peonies are very attractive landscape plants with beautiful foliage which lasts from early spring to the frost, when the leaves drop off. The woody structure remains and is not cut down, since tree peonies bloom on 'old wood', and hold the buds for the next season.
Flower form and size: Lotus or light semi-double, 7-8".
Flower fragrance: Sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season blooming, flowers in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May or first week of June.
Deer do not find the foliage attractive, so they are considered deer resistant. However, they are not deer-proof and we have had very occasional browsing.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant sizes: Available in 3 sizes. See drop down menu below to select the size you prefer.
The 2-3 year size have one-to-two woody stems with buds, and a well developed root system. This size plant will most likely flower in 1 to 2 years.
The 3-4 year size with have 3-4 woody stems. The 6-7 year size will have 6-7 woody stems. Larger plants have multiple flower buds set and will likely bloom the first year in the ground.
