Cricket Hill Garden
Paeonia lutea var. ludlowii
Paeonia lutea var. ludlowii
One of the wild ancestors of the cultivated peony, this species tree peony grows naturally throughout southwest China. Wild populations have been depleted due to over harvesting. Our original seed stock came from Galen Burrell, a reputable and well known collector of species tree peonies.
Tall and spreading habit, will reach 6' at maturity. Small 2" lemon yellow flowers bloom late in the tree peony season, at the same time as the American hybrids of which this is a parent plant. Large, beautifully dissected foliage stays a shade of chartreuse green all season.
In our USDA zone 6a this plant experiences much winter die back. In order to have this peony successfully flower in USDA zone 6 and colder, plant in a sheltered location and mulch in the winter. Recommended for USDA zones 7, 8 and 9, where it does not experience any winter die-back. A real rarity for the garden.
When we ship: FALL 2024.
