Paeonia, 'Southern Beauty' hybrid tree peony

Notable characteristics: Full double yellow blossoms with a strong orange/red tinge to petals. Blossoms face upwards and are well supported on strong stems. Mid- to late season bloomer. 

Originally seedling # 111/1. Parentage is unknown, but the seed came from famed US breeder Bill Seidl in the early 1990s. It was grown out, selected and named by Jane and Trevor Sutherland of Southern Charm Paeonies in Timaru, New Zealand in 2001. We imported this rare tree peony from New Zealand about five years ago and it has since become a visitor favorite.

Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced:  Advanced generation P. lutea hybrid, Irvine/Southerland , 2001

Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Mounded, to 3' tall and 3' wide.

Flower form and size: Full double, 7". Flowers are well displayed on top of foliage. 

Flower fragrance: Sweet.

Bloom time: Late-season hybrid tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the first week of June.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.


Plant size: 1 year old tree grafted peonies have 1 woody stem, with side buds, and a well developed root system.
