Paeonia rockii, 'White Screen Reflects a Blue Jewel' Chinese rockii tree peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 白壁藍瑖 Bai Bi Lan Duan
Notable characteristics: Silky, upward facing flowers are pure white with dramatic reddish-purple flares at the base of the petals. Early blooming with good fragrance. This variety establishes quickly and is a very vigorous grower and prolific bloomer. Highly recommended for the beginner and connoisseur alike.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Rockii group, this cultivar is a classical variety which has long been cultivated in the famous peony growing center of Luoyang in Henan Province..
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright and semi-spreading habit, to 3.5' tall and 4' wide.
Flower form and size: Single form blossoms, 7-9".
Flower fragrance: Delicate, sweet.
Bloom time: Early season Chinese tree peony peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second week of May. Blooms at least a week before other rockii type tree peonies.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 1 year old grafted tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a graft root. The plant may or may not have some of its own roots already developed. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
